USS Macon Over Seattle - 1938

Cropped from an extreme upward angle, compositional emphasis is on the American Flag, and an in-flight USS Macon aircraft carrier. Airship flew over Seattle from the southeast in 1938.

Built in 1933 in Akron, Ohio, for the U.S. Navy, the USS Macon was a 6,500,000 cubic foot helium-filled rigid airship.The USS Macon participated in extensive Navy exercises over the Pacific Coast and Pacific Ocean through 1934. On the evening of February 12, 1935, the USS Macon encountered a storm off Point Sur, California and crashed into the Pacific. All but two crew members survived. The crash marked the end of the Navy’s rigid airship program. (source)
